I've been making my own music on and off for a few years now - it's still very much a side project but I'd love to have more time (and money) to invest in it. I started out using Garageband when I was bored and living in Japan. The last year or so I've been using Ableton Live, as well as some neat toys like the Korg Kaossilator and KP mini.
My style changes dramatically depending on my mood, sometimes its fairly harsh, sometimes slow and dark, and very rarely bouncy and 80s. My major musical influences are Depeche Mode, Richard D James, Radiohead, UNKLE and the Chemical Brothers, but I regularly listen to Kid Koala, The Prodigy, Autechre, Modeselektor, Blonde and NIN.
